How would you describe yourself?
Hello everyone! Before I start, I would like to thank the International Relations Office (IRO) of the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca for allowing me to share my experience of studying at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca.
My name is BIRASA Raymond, and I am an international student from Rwanda. I am also a Romanian scholarship winner offered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs between 2019 and 2022. I completed my master’s studies in Electrical Engineering with a specialization in Control Systems and Monitoring in Electrical Engineering (SMCIE) at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, Romania. And I will start my Ph.D. studies at UTCN in October 2022.
Why did you decide to study in the Romanian language while the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca offers also some programs in English and French?
Firstly, as I said above, I am a Romanian scholarship student. With this scholarship, you have a chance to take a Romanian language preparatory year. I learned the Romanian language, and after one year, I was able to take my master’s studies in the Romanian language.
Secondly, taking my master’s studies in the Romanian language was an opportunity to study with Romanian students, where I learned more things from them, improved my Romanian language level, and till now they are my friends.
What are the challenges of studying in a foreign language?
When I realized that I must study in the Romanian language, I thought it would be more challenging because I never knew any words in Romanian. But I said that it is possible if I focus on my courses. To be honest, sometimes I had to explain something to my professors, and I could not do it. Generally, I can say that I faced no challenges because I could pass all the exams with high grades, I was one of the best performers in the faculty, and I received a performance scholarship during my second year of master’s. I thank the Faculty of Electrical Engineering as well as the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca for motivating the students.
Can you share one experience you had during your master’s studies at UTCN?
I began my master’s in Electrical Engineering in 2020 up to 2022, and during my studies the language of instruction was Romanian, as I had a Romanian Language Preparatory year before the master’s studies. During my master’s studies I studied together with Romanian students. Therefore, my integration was easy due to the one year I had already spent at the Technical University of Cluj-Napoca, and I had a good time with my classmates. I appreciate the work of the professors, the academics who are experts in their respective fields, and how they encourage the students to achieve their goals. It is a real privilege to be taught by them.
Stiți despre programul ERASMUS?
Da, știu programul ERASMUS pentru că eu am participat în acel program în Spania, la Universitatea de Oviedo (Campus de Gijón) și mi-a plăcut.

Ne puteți spune ceva despre temă de lucrării de disertație ?
Temă de lucrării de disertație este despre controlul vectorial al Motorului Sincron cu Magneți Permanenți (MSMP), Aplicație la o motocicletă electrică. Poluarea aerului este o problemă gravă de mediu în întreaga lume și a atras atenția cercetătorilor din diferite domenii. Emisiile de carbon de la vehiculele pe benzină sunt una dintre cauzele poluării aerului. O soluție pentru reducerea emisiilor de carbon este utilizarea vehiculelor ”verzi”, din care fac parte și motocicletele electrice, pentru șoferi și pasageri, care pot asigura dezvoltarea durabilă a mediului în mod ecologic. Idea generală era să studiez cum MSMP poate fi utilizat în loc de motorul pe benzină pentru a proteja mediul înconjurător și am putut să împlinesc obiectiv.
Aveți un mesaj pentru alți studenți doresc să studieze la UTCN ?
Dacă sunteți în căutarea unei universități în străinătate, sunteți bine veniți la Universitatea Tehnică din Cluj-Napoca. Cu UTCN, veți avea multe oportunități în timpul și după studii. UTCN vă va ajuta să vă orientați astfel încât să vă puteți atinge obiectivele.
Cluj-Napoca este un oraș bun pentru a studia și este primitor cu studenții străini. Pe lângă studiile la UTCN, veți putea participa la un program ERASMUS la o altă universitate din afara României. Biroul ERASMUS vă îndrumă cu privire la modul în care puteți participa la acest program.
